Protect your Factory Operatives from Tinnitus

Protect your Factory Operatives from Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a common condition across all age groups but it is more prevalent for people who have hearing loss. Whilst many sufferers can generally continue with day-to-day activities despite their condition, others are affected severely.  About 30% of people experience tinnitus at some time in their life, whilst an estimated 10% suffer persistent tinnitus, which can grossly affect their quality of life.

The British Tinnitus Association describes the condition as ‘the sensation of hearing a sound in the absence of any external sound.”  Sufferers may hear ringing, whooshing, humming and/or buzzing continuously or it can come or go in just one ear or both. Experiencing tinnitus for the first time can be pretty frightening, and although there is no cure for tinnitus there are things that can be done to manage the condition such as using relaxation techniques, offset sound therapy and hearing aids. Lessen the chances of your workers getting tinnitus or existing sufferers from getting any worse, by providing them with quality ear protection.

The exact cause of tinnitus is not known, but generally experts tend to believe it comes about as the result of some kind of change, either mental or physical. If a person suffers hearing loss, an ear infection or high levels of sudden stress the amount of information being sent to the brain alters. The brain tends to respond by bombarding the ear with requests for information. The bombardment of extra information the ear receives from the brain is the sound we refer to as ‘tinnitus’.

Frequent, prolonged exposure to loud noise increases the risk of tinnitus occurring or making the condition worse for existing sufferers. Protecting ears from very loud sounds (such as hammering metal, power tools, heavy machinery etc.) is a must and effective ear protection is of course highly recommended.

The intensity of a noise is universally measured in decibels(dB) but as well as the intensity consideration must be given to the duration of the exposure to the noise. Most international regulations for noise exposure at work state that the loudest noise someone should be exposed to for an 8-hour working day is 85dB. The British Tinnitus Association website explains this very well here.

We offer businesses an 8 week ProtectHear® trial option so you can try them in your factory before you buy.

ProtectHear® – the UK’s market leading custom moulded earplugs, available in 3 colours and have a lifespan of 5 years.  Whilst the hearing of ProtectHear® wearers is adequately protected from industrial noise they can still hear speech, warnings and alarms as they go about their day-to-day activities. Factory radio communications integration options are also available with ProtectHear® earplugs.

To move forward with a ‘Try Before you Buy’ trial a ProtectHear® technician will visit your factory to take ear impressions of your workers, so individuals can each have a unique pair of custom made earplugs that will last them 5 years.

Ear plugs feature in ‘Tomorrows Health & Safety’…

Ear plugs feature in ‘Tomorrows Health & Safety’

Our ear plugs are featured in February’s Health & Safety Magazine; ‘No Need to Shout’ on page 4. As we know NIHL (Noise Induced Hearing Loss) is irreversible, this article reflects on why protecting your hearing is essential.

Mick Whitaker our Managing Director gives an insightful overview on NIHL, our ProtectHear® product and the training for using hearing protection. It is an ever-growing concern to protect our hearing, so no permanent damage is caused.

Our ear plugs offer effective protection but do not overprotect, users can wear them all day, whilst having the ability to hear conversation and hear warnings. This works well especially in working areas where the noise varies by significant levels. The soft silicone design of our product allows users to wear all day comfortably.

Our ‘Try Before you Buy’ is a great way for businesses to see the benefits in comparison to disposables and ear defenders, with 1-10 people allowed on a trial for an 8 week period. Our toolbox talks support the trial process and we work with you to make the difference.

We can also provide communication accessories to suit your needs; these connect to our ear plugs. Our SpeakHear® accessories have a 12 month warranty, we can also offer ATEX approved accessories.

Re-branding appears on our new Brochures!

New Brand, New Brochure

We have launched a completely new brochure from our re-branding project and are really pleased with the results. The brochure was recently taken to The Health and Safety Event and proved to be a success; lots of engagement and good feedback about how our product can help protect employees.

The brochure has undergone a huge transformation in comparison to our old one, it features enhanced content and brand new imagery.  Here is the before and after comparison:

The new graphics definitely make the brochure stand out and works well with the new brand. Our original brochure was an A4 4 sided, whereas our revamped one is A5 with 16 pages of useful information!

Want to have a look for yourself? You can download the brochure or you can check out our interactive brochure.

Custom moulded earplugs feature in The Rail Professional Yearbook

We are pleased to feature in The Rail Professional Yearbook this year and hope we will make interesting reading for the many industry professionals, who make the railway what it is today.

A snippet is below – you can scroll down for a link to the full article which is printable or viewable on line.

Custom moulded earplugs

We have supplied the rail industry for 8 years now, being the only approved supplier of custom moulded earplugs for Network Rail. The article mentions our ‘Try before you buy’ process; this is a great way for companies to test the product for an 8 week period, with no commitment to buy, and enjoy the experience of our top class support and service that we are known for in the industry.

Our product allows noise to come through at a safe attenuated level, allowing the user to hear conversation and warnings. This is great for track safety, providing a better protection in all areas in comparison to ear defenders and disposables.

We also delve in to NIHL (Noise-induced hearing loss). NIHL is a topic forever discussed, and we make it clear that it is important to get the point across to management teams as well as workers. The importance of hearing cannot be underestimated and our mission is to reinforce that with a quality solution that works on many levels.

Our article is featured in pages 114-115, and you can read the full article about custom moulded earplugs .
