The Health and Safety North Review

The Health and Safety North Review

The Health and Safety North brings with it over 200 exhibition stands, seminars and 2000 visitors. The event was established in 2007 and this year coincided with The Fire Safety North. Western Business Exhibitions re located the venue after many years at Bolton to EventCity in Manchester this year, to offer ease of access to those visiting.

The HSE report real world use of and performance of hearing protection shows that just 60% of workers are correctly fitting their disposables. Under protecting is a concern but over protecting is as well, as you need employees to be aware of noise from forklifts, alarm signals and interaction with colleagues.

ProtectHear® was established in April 2000 by Directors Richard Potter and Mick Whitaker, over the years becoming one of the UK’s leading custom ear plugs provider. Network Rail, Weetabix and British Steel are a few of our customers. We pride ourselves on our great service and education.

ProtectHear® offers a vented product that attenuates noises to a safe level, so users have no need to remove their hearing protection. This feature is useful in all noisy industries such as rail, highways and manufacturing. With a lifespan of 5 years ProtectHear® has a return on investment compared to disposables normally within 18 months, you can calculate your savings with our cost savings calculator. To show our confidence we offer a ‘Try Before you Buy’ to companies looking for solutions. A supported toolbox talk is also provided to educate employees on the trial and the benefits.

ProtectHear® will be visiting The Health and Safety Event again next year which will be taking place on the 10th – 12th April 2018, at The NEC in Birmingham. Check out more details of the event on the website.

The Best ear plugs to use with other head PPE

The Best ear plugs to use with other head PPE

It is difficult to know what hearing protection to provide when using PPE such as hard hats, safety goggles and Hazmat hoods. Over the ear defenders can cause disruption when wearing this type of PPE, as they can’t be used effectively or put on at all. Disposables may give you the protection you require if fitted correctly, but communication with others is difficult and awareness of the environment becomes an issue.

The best ear plugs to use are custom ear plugs; these fit perfectly into your ear and can be worn with all forms of PPE, this includes spectacle wearers. This makes the job much easier as you are protected in the environment and can still hear speech. Our custom ear plugs are very comfortable and can be worn through shifts with ease, eliminating the need to remove when moving around work areas.

Custom ear plugs take to the track – Renault Formula One

Custom ear plugs

Did you know that the Renault F1 team use custom ear plugs? As they are working on the track the team need to hear conversation whilst being protected. With cockpit noise often topping a whopping 130 decibels (dB) custom hearing protection is perfect for this. Allowing them to keep their earplugs in whilst hearing important and often critical instructions. Disposables in this type of environment would have to be removed constantly, and the team wouldn’t be able to communicate properly with this type of protection.

Hearing protection is a big deal in Formula One, from the track team, spectators to the drivers themselves. In an interview in The Daily Mail in 2006 Sterling Moss talked publicly about his battle with hearing loss due to the sport, he said: “I used to stuff my ears with cotton wool to muffle the sound and make me more comfortable. But after every race, I’d have a sound like a rushing waterfall in my ears. It went on for days, an annoying noise in the background. Then you’d be on to the next race. After a while, the noise just never went and it remained always in the background. I know now this was tinnitus, a warning sign that my hearing was being damaged.”

As standard, the hearing protection currently provided most to Formula One drivers is that of custom ear plugs with built-in speakers and the Renault crew have clearly been given this treatment. Two scientists from the US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Hazard said a while back that the whole crew should also be offered this kind of protection and that awareness should be brought to spectators too.

SpeakHear® Communications

Radio Accessories such as SpeakHear® are also important for Formula One teams to communicate; with custom ear plugs clients can be connected to radios. This allows communication to each other, without the need to remove the earplug – the protection is very much like ear defenders, but offers an advanced way of staying protected, whilst being able to hear surroundings.

How do I fit my custom moulded earplugs

How do I fit my custom moulded earplugs?

With custom moulded earplugs an accurate fit and proper protection is assured. A pair of custom moulded earplugs are streets ahead of disposables, and consequently the fitting is a little different.  In this blog we are going to explain step by step how to fit our earplugs, with the help of our Managing Director Richard…

But before that….many of you ask…

How is the shape of my ear moulded?

We carefully take an ‘impression’ of your ear shape before we produce your plugs. You can see how impressions are taken before they are manufactured into ProtectHear® with our personally moulded earplugs process blog.

How to fit – an easy guide….

Firstly you need to identify which earplug is for which ear, this is easy as the right ear plug is marked with a red dot.

Before attempting to fit the earplug you should make sure your hands are clean, holding the plug with the index finger and thumb with the flat side facing away from the ear.

Place the earplug canal into the ear canal, gently twisting the ear plug back until it slides easily into the ear.

Once the earplug is secured in the bottom half of the ear, place the earplug helix into the top of your ear.

Ensuring the fit is correct is important; gently push the flat area of the earplug into the bowl for both ears.

But how do you remove them?

Removing is simple…

Using clean hands press on the back of the earflap with index finger, to lift earplug away from the ear bowl.

Smoothly slide your index finger and grip the front of the ear plug using your thumb.

From there gently twist the earplug forward to remove safely.
